About Mt Barnett and the Kimberley region
The Kimberley region is located in the northern part of Western Australia and covers about 421,000 square kilometres. Vast wildlife sanctuaries, spectacular gorges and thundering waterfalls provide the perfect backdrop for life in the Kimberley.
The Kimberley has only three towns with a population of more than 2,000 (Broome, Derby and Kununurra), and the total population is around 37,000. In addition to the sealed Route 1 which runs along the southern part of the area, the unsealed Gibb River Road runs through the heart of the region from Derby to the highway near Kununurra.
Mt Barnett is situated on the Gibb River Road, and is a community roughly 300 km east of Derby. The community comprises of about 20 houses, a school and the JAHS clinic, and has a population of approximately 80-100 people. Mt Barnett is a working cattle station and roadhouse owned by the Kupungarri community, which actively participates in the management of both these business enterprises. The geology of the area is varied and fascinating, as well as producing some spectacular scenery!
